The Zoology Department offers number of integrated programs of course work and independent research leading to the Master of Science and Philosophy of Doctor Degrees in different branches of biological Sciences. Independent research is conducted under the guidance of a thesis advisor and advisory committee selected by the student to reflect her or his research interest. Research specializations of the department range from cellular and molecular biology and physiology to ecosystem and environmental biology. Student research projects benefit from access to a variety of on-campus and off-campus resources and collaborations. All Ms.c & Ph.D students will complete and defend a thesis.
The M.S. and PhD programs currently enroll approximately 50 students in a variety of fields. Financial support (stipend and waiver of tuition) is available in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships. Potential applicants should see degree requirements and application procedures, and they are strongly encouraged to contact department members in their area. |

The research work run mainly in two parallel directions. The first one depend mainly on phytochemical extraction of products from blue green algae and assessments its hepato-& nephrotoxicity by investigating the tissues at light and ultrastructural levels. After obtaining good findings, the properties of the products evaluated in order to widely apply according to its clinical importance as anti-oxidants, anti-viral and anti-cancer agents. The other field of work, studying the protective efficacy of some anti-schistosomal vaccines like DNA and anti-idiotypic vaccines through the application of immunological, molecular and histochemical techniques. Molecular biological and immunocytochemical approaches are utilized to confirm the presence and possible involvement of these molecules in transduction and adaptation. The research work planned mainly on assessments of pathogenic protozoans and helminthes from both Nile water and fishes especially cichlids, cat fishes and also amphibians. The parasites are studied ecologically beside anatomical, SEM, TEM, flouresence microscopy and confocal lazer scanning microscopy. The fine structures of the adhesive & haptoral glands, spermatogenesis, Spermiogenesis & spermatozoa, oogenesis, surface sensilla as well as mode of feeding and digestion. Fresh water and marine molluscs and crustaceans are also taken in considerations. The research group members of Invertebrates and Parasitology are interested in the following topics:

V. Entomology Group |

Research on biological control of pathogenic insects producing diseases to human and/or domestic animals as well as affecting the economic crops are the main research topic. Other research interest involves the application of natural plant extracts and separations of their active ingredients and study by using spectral analysis for controlling metamorphosis of insects. Beside the application of molecular techniques in current research, other recent methodology of SEM and TEM are applied for identification and classification of insects. The entomology program's greatest strength lies in the diversity of the staff, and in the maintenance of a delicate balance between theoretical and practical, laboratory and field, and short-term versus long-term projects.
