The Zoology Department offers number of integrated programs of course work and independent research leading to the Master of Science and Philosophy of Doctor Degrees in different branches of biological Sciences. Independent research is conducted under the guidance of a thesis advisor and advisory committee selected by the student to reflect her or his research interest. Research specializations of the department range from cellular and molecular biology and physiology to ecosystem and environmental biology. Student research projects benefit from access to a variety of on-campus and off-campus resources and collaborations. All Ms.c & Ph.D students will complete and defend a thesis.

The M.S. and PhD programs currently enroll approximately 50 students in a variety of fields. Financial support (stipend and waiver of tuition) is available in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships. Potential applicants should see degree requirements and application procedures, and they are strongly encouraged to contact department members in their area.

Physiology and Environmental Science

Physiology section
The research interests of the physiology group are in the fields of toxicology, cancer prevention and treatment and diabetic complications. The role of synthetic antioxidants and natural plants and herbal extracts in ameliorating the toxicity of environmental pollutants on the living survivals, control of cancer growth and manage diabetic –induced diseases are the major theme of the research interest. Valuation of biomarkers, including specific enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants involved in oxidative stress leading to apoptosis is assessed. Considerable physiological, molecular biological and biochemical evidences from both animal and human studies indicates that antioxidants may slow or possibly prevent the development of cancer and diabetes and control several toxic pollutants induced outcomes. These trials continue to investigate the effect of new compounds on cancer and diabetes on molecular biological basis.

II. Comparative Anatomy & Embryology Group

Comparative Anatomy:

The research work deals with the variations of different structural analysis of vertebrate body organs with special interest on the central nervous system, sense organs, mode of sensation and locomotion as well as axial and appendicular skeleton. In addition, evaluating the evolutionary biology of vertebrates especially of their sense organs and nervous system is included in research priorities.

Embryology:

The research interest deals with the environmental and diseased factors involved in the induction of both morphologically, anatomically and skeletal congenital anomalies. Histogenesis of the affected body organs is determined at the light, scanning and transmission electron microscopic levels. Molecular analysis of growth defects are involved during pre-& postnatal life. Besides, the reproductive toxicity of the applied environmental agents as well as diseases including Rheumatoid arthritis, Phenylketonuria and hypercholesterolemia are involved in our study. The adverse effects of feeding on processed foods are assessed for teratogenicity and impairment of both cerebral cortex and muscle development. Different natural plant extracts are useful for ameliorating the drastic effect of the experimentally induced diseases on maternal body organs including liver, kidney, heart, and long bones as well as the incidence of birth defects.

III. Cell Biology, Histology &Genetics Group

The research work run mainly in two parallel directions. The first one depend mainly on phytochemical extraction of products from blue green algae and assessments its hepato-& nephrotoxicity by investigating the tissues at light and ultrastructural levels. After obtaining good findings, the properties of the products evaluated in order to widely apply according to its clinical importance as anti-oxidants, anti-viral and anti-cancer agents. The other field of work, studying the protective efficacy of some anti-schistosomal vaccines like DNA and anti-idiotypic vaccines through the application of immunological, molecular and histochemical techniques. Molecular biological and immunocytochemical approaches are utilized to confirm the presence and possible involvement of these molecules in transduction and adaptation.

VI. Invertebrates and Parasitology Group

The research work planned mainly on assessments of pathogenic protozoans and helminthes from both Nile water and fishes especially cichlids, cat fishes and also amphibians. The parasites are studied ecologically beside anatomical, SEM, TEM, flouresence microscopy and confocal lazer scanning microscopy. The fine structures of the adhesive & haptoral glands, spermatogenesis, Spermiogenesis & spermatozoa, oogenesis, surface sensilla as well as mode of feeding and digestion. Fresh water and marine molluscs and crustaceans are also taken in considerations.

The research group members of Invertebrates and Parasitology are interested in the following topics:

  1. Identification and study of the anatomical structure of the fresh water molluscs.

  2.  Studying the effect of plant extracts of the snails of medical importance, which are intermediate hosts for many of parasites that cause endemic diseases such as bilharzia and Faschiola and others.

  3. A comprehensive survey of land snails in Egypt and their identification in various ways such as scanning electron microscopy, analysis of DNA, and the sperm ultrastructure using the transmission electron microscopy.

  4.  Investigation of heavy metals in Gastropods and Bivalves using them as biological indicators for pollution.

  5. Wide-range survey, identification, and classification of the protozoa and parasites infecting various hosts, such as marine and freshwater fish, amphibians, and reptiles, birds and mammals using classical and modern tools.

V. Entomology Group

Research on biological control of pathogenic insects producing diseases to human and/or domestic animals as well as affecting the economic crops are the main research topic. Other research interest involves the application of natural plant extracts and separations of their active ingredients and study by using spectral analysis for controlling metamorphosis of insects. Beside the application of molecular techniques in current research, other recent methodology of SEM and TEM are applied for identification and classification of insects. The entomology program's greatest strength lies in the diversity of the staff, and in the maintenance of a delicate balance between theoretical and practical, laboratory and field, and short-term versus long-term projects.
