Brief about the Physics Department

The Physics Department was established in the year 1969 as one of six departments of Faculty of Science under the supervision of Cairo University. In 1973, Mansoura University was founded and the department started to develop to keep pace with all development in physics education.

The Department of Physics offers programs of study leading to the Master of Science (MSC) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. The department is strongly committed to graduate education and supports it by maintaining a strong and diverse research programs.

A basic goal of the program of graduate education is to prepare students for careers in research and related fields. It is intended that graduates will have the education and training necessary to enable them to make fundamental contributions to knowledge in physics or their chosen field. Further, it is anticipated that they will be peers with the next generation of technology leaders in industry and academia.

The department has about 90 faculty members performing theoretical and experimental research in both fundamental areas such as Particle Physics, Plasma Physics and Nuclear Physics, and in Applied Areas such as Optics, Solar Energy, Biophysics, Radiation Heat Transfer, Metal physics, Glass and Polymeric materials. Moreover, some members working in a very advanced research topics like Fractals and Critical Phenomena and Nonlinear Dynamical Systems.

Although there is no a well know ranking scheme for the Physics Departments in our country, one can easily and safely recognize the physics department in Mansoura University among the top four physics departments in Egypt. What can support this concluding remark is the number of award obtained by the staff members since it is founded in 1969 as well as the annual publications of the Department members.

Besides the yearly appointment for the best students to be the future members of the department after getting their Ph D’s, the department offers research and teaching assistantships. Our graduates always find a position somewhere in the academic institutes and Industry that reflects the good repetition the department has.

The department offers four undergraduate programs as:

1. Sc. Degree in physics as physics major,
2. Sc. Degree in Biophysics as Biophysics major,
3. Sc. Degree in physics and Chemistry as double major

The department also offers four Master programs as:

1. MSc Degree in Theoretical Physics
2. MSc Degree in Experimental program
3. MSc Degree in Biophysics,
4. MSc Degree in Medical Physics

In each program, thesis programs are offered leading to the master's degree. The student must complete the specific course requirements. Most of the candidates are required to teach elementary laboratories while they are working for their degree.

Also, the physics department offers Two Doctoral (PhD) programs as:

1. PhD Degree in Theoretical Physics
2. PhD Degree in Experimental program
3. PhD Degree in Biophysics,
4. PhD Degree in Medical Physics

Finally, the physics department offers a Postgraduate Diploma programs as:

Diploma in Radiation Physics
