The study began in the Geology Department in 1969 as a branch of Cairo University, and then as part of the Faculty of Science, Mansoura University in 1973. The scientific and research fields in the Geology Department vary and include the Petroleum and Water geology; Sediments and Sedimentary rocks; Stratigraphy and Paleontology; Minerals and Ores Deposits; Applied Geophysics and Environmental Geology.

The Geology Department always has a priority in the projects and the research plans, as Mansoura is located in the eastern middle of the Nile Delta. Subsurface information, stratification, sedimentation properties, and economic potential were of particular interest to the faculty members. Moreover, the current environmental risks, which include coastal erosion, soil degradation, salinity and tectonic events, which include seismic sequences and basin subsidence, that threaten the modern sector of the Nile Delta, which deserve a strong studies in the Geology Department at Mansoura University.
