Symposia and conferences
The Department of Geology, since its beginning in 1969, directed a large part of the research activity to the Nile Delta region, due to the university’s location in the middle of this prolific expanse. This coincided with the discovery of gas- and oilfields in the Abu Madi, Abu Qir and other commercial leases.
The studies conducted by the department on the delta region varied to cover most geological fields, whether in the fields of applied geophysics, sedimentary properties of the subsurface sequence and its hydrocarbon potentials, biostratigraphy subdivision, or in the field of hydrology, archeology and black sand deposits, with monitoring and observation of areas of erosion, sedimentation and subsidence on the coastal belt of the delta, as well as studying the reasons for the increased rates of environmental pollution effects. Because of the belief of the faculty members of the department in the importance of the Nile Delta region, the department held the National Conference on the Delta’s Natural Resources and Environment and Development Problems since November 1995, in which 12 papers were presented, including three papers on natural gas in the Nile Delta. In March 1999, the university held the first international conference of ancient and modern deltas, organized by the Department of Geology in the Faculties of Sciences in Mansoura and Damietta, and supported by most of the petroleum companies operating in Egypt.
.
To complement this activity, five workshops were held in the department:
- The first of them was in May 2002 that tackled with seismic activity in Egypt and North Africa and a comprehensive study to reduce risks, attended by a vast number of Arab and foreign scientists.
- The second workshop was in 2003 on the applications of geographic information systems, and sponsored by the ESRI Institute (United States) and its agent in Egypt Quality Standards.
- The third was in April 2004, when the first workshop on oil and gas systems was held in the Nile Delta, in which a group of companies working in the field of oil and natural gas exploration and exploration in the delta region and the adjacent offshore marine area participated in it. Representatives of BP, Rashid Petroleum, SHELL, Geisum and the German Integrated Exploration System Company have been attended.
- The fourth was in April 2006, where the Department of Geology organized the second workshop on “Subsurface Geology of the Nile Delta: Basin Analysis and Petroleum Systems” in cooperation with some petroleum companies working in the field of oil and natural gas exploration and exploration in the delta region and the adjacent marine area, including Rashid Petroleum Company, BG, BP, Schlumberger and Roxar.
- The fifth was in April 2008, where the Department of Geology organized the third workshop on: “Subsurface Geology of the Nile Delta: Basin Analysis and Petroleum Systems”.

The Quaternary, the most popular symposium, has been held at the Faculty of Science since 1982. It is a symposium specialized in "The Study of the Geology of the Quaternary and Development in Egypt", where the Delta region has the biggest share in discussions. The number of these meetings reached 19 in cooperation with the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology. The last of which was in April 2011, thanks to our late Prof. Zaki Zaghloul, founder of the department. We ask God to bless him with his vast mercy as a reward for what he has given us and generations of geologists of knowledge and giving without waiting for a reward. We ask Allah to reward him on behalf of us and his students and this symposium the best reward.
